Our judge this month:  Colin Schofields

General Feedback :

The Set Subject for our February Competition was “Monochrome” and, as usual we also ran an Open competition across our three grades.

We were very fortunate to have Colin Schofields as our Judge for the month. Colin has completed the NSW FCC Judges’ course, and mentors new judges. He regularly judges local and national competitions, and has worked with many well-known photographers in Australia. Colin enjoys helping others in the field as he has a very sound knowledge of camera technology, and also enjoys helping people to use Photoshop. Colin enjoys most forms of photography. He believes in planning a photograph and getting the camera settings right before taking the shot. Colin considers photography a very supportive hobby, where people enjoy sharing their knowledge and helping others to develop their skills.

Narooma Camera Club would like to sincerely thank Colin for providing us with his insightful feedback on our images, and useful hints on how to improve our photography.  We all appreciate the time and effort Colin put in to judging our February competition for us.

Our judge this month:  Don Munro

General Feedback :

Our second set subject for the year was MACRO photography and, as always, we also ran an open subject competition.

We had 16 Members entering 48 images for judging.

We were very fortunate to have a magnificent judge from the Federation of Camera Clubs named Don Munro for our Monthly Subject of Macro Photography.

Don looks for the three criteria that occur in almost all successful photos:

Content: What is the photo about? What story are you telling? Why was it important to take this photograph?

Composition: Do all the elements of the photo help tell your “story” without distractions?

Technical: Does the lighting, exposure, depth of field, shutter speed, and other technical aspects help communicate your “story”?

Narooma Camera Club would like to sincerely thank Don for providing us with his fantastic breakdown of his feedback on our images, and useful hints on how to improve our photography.

April  2021

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Our Set subject for April is :  Landscape photography

- Due to be emailed in by the 1st Tuesday of April -

Landscape Photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast

and unending, but other times microscopic.

Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. Landscape photography is done for a variety of reasons

Our judge this month:  Colin Talbot

General Feedback :

The Set Subject for our April Competition was “Landscape” and, as usual we also ran an Open competition across our three grades.

Colin Talbot was our judge for the month. Colin has been a resident of Kangaroo Valley for the past 30 years, and is a freelance, semi-professional photographer with interests across all photographic genres, but specializing in nature, landscapes, light painting and creative photography.

As a self-taught photographer without any formal training, he has always harboured urges to push photographic boundaries past established norms.

Colin has always had a fascination with exploring the combined effects of light and time when these two elements are the only raw materials.

He chooses “touch” and “feel” over technical excellence; “flow” and “balance” over conventional rules of composition; “light” and “shadow” over the perfect histogram, and sympathetic use of negative space to heighten “mood” and “emotion”.

Colin has competed and been awarded locally, nationally and internationally and been active in local Photography Clubs with presentations, workshops and judging.

Examples of Colin’s work can be seen at:

OCTOBER 2021

LINES IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Our Set subject for October is Lines in Photography  :

- Due to be emailed in by the 1st Tuesday of October

Lines in Photography  – What is a line in photography definition?

A line in a photo is a point that moves, leading towards something.

This can be vertical lines, parallel lines, curved lines, diagonal lines, and even strong horizontal lines.

A leading line helps the viewer's eye move from one part of the image to another.

NOVEMBER 2021

NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Our Set subject for November is  Night Photography :

- Due to be emailed in by the 1st Tuesday of November

When speaking about night photography and what there is to it, the first

thought is long exposure, car  light trails, city lights, trains at night, boats at

night like ferries etc.

While this is correct, there is a lot more to night photography and since we have more time for our exposure, this might mean endless fun. Light painting, steel wool twirling, fire twirling and many more too.
