2019 Christmas Party / AGM / Image of the Year

Narooma Camera Club’s Christmas Party was held in the Montague Room at Club Narooma on Tuesday Evening 17th December 2019. The party was followed by the club’s Annual General Meeting and presentation of awards for the Image of the Year.

AGM

Last year’s (2018) AGM was a disappointing affair, with the club unable to form a committee for the year. NCC was saved from disbanding by a dedicated core of members who volunteered to run a jury-rigged committee to keep the club afloat. All members of the club owe a debt of gratitude to Brian Gunter, Krysia St Clair, and Rosy Williams, who prevailed with help throughout the year from other club members. Under the circumstances, it turned out to be a fairly successful year.

This year’s AGM was opened by Mike St Clair acting as de facto President. Reports were presented from the “Secretary”, “Treasurer”, and “Events Officer” and accepted by the members present.

During 2019, a group of members concerned for the ongoing future of the club held informal meetings with an eye to forming a management group to present to members at this year’s AGM. As a result, the following nominations were put to the members, and all positions were elected unopposed:

President                               Wes Smith

Secretary                                Ally Aitken

Treasurer                                Wendy Fisk

Events Officer                        Katherine Wagner

Facebook Officer                   Krysia St Clair

Club Membership Officer     Sue Lawson

Web Site Officer                    Russell Howick

Congratulations, and thanks to all.

We're all looking forward to a rejuvenated club as we head into our 20th year.

Image of the Year

Our judge for the Image of the Year was Linda Fury, President of the Kiama-Shellharbour Camera Club. We’d like to thank Linda for the time and effort she put into the task, and for her comprehensive comments on each and every entry.

There were 25 entries received from 15 members which were displayed together with Linda’s critiques. The winners of this year’s Image of the Year competition are:

As a club we  decided due to the stress for our members from the fires in our region that the January get together would be put off and changed to our February outing.  We decided it would be good to chose a business that was affected by the fires and it would be good for our group to support the business by having our outing there.

February 17, 2020

Our Set subject for February is :   Running water - You can photograph Rivers, Streams, Waterfalls, tap water.   We have provided you a link for printed material just below  or  try this video link -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-veVUJ7tmDY

Our judge this month:   Tony Betts is a FCC Certified Judge.

.

General Feedback :   Thank you for inviting me to judge your images. I can see a range of abilities and experience levels in this club. Like nearly all judges will say, the comments are just my opinion. It is always the case. I call it as I see it. I comment on all images but do try to give more information to those who are learning. The more experienced members know their work is good and I hope I am able to add a bit to those who are newer to get there themselves. What I did like is that many may not have the technical ability (yet) to fully carry things through but I can see you are thinking in a creative manner. Well done.  I am currently living in Yangon, Myanmar where I am on an assignment for Australian Volunteers International.

Because Tony Betts is currently overseas, the entries were judged remotely, with Tony’s critiques being read out at the meeting as each entry was displayed. Tony gave detailed feedback on every image that was submitted, and for some photographs, created a copy showing his suggested changes to improve the impact of the image. Narooma Camera Club would like to thank Tony for the time and effort that he put into judging our competition for us.

Following the coffee break, the meeting discussed the fallout from the recent bushfires in our region, and sought to identify what we as a club could do in a practical sense to support our local Rural Fire Service Brigades, and those in our community who have been directly affected by the bushfires. Some constructive ideas were floated before a sub-committee was formed to work up those ideas before coming back to the club with their proposals.

There followed some discussion of future photographic outings by the club, the first of which will be a visit to Mogo Zoo once it reopens in March. More information on those outings will be posted to our website as it becomes available.

We then showed some of the photos of bushfires and the subsequent bush regeneration that some of our members have taken over the past couple of months.

March - Set Subject - 4 Seasons (summer, spring, winter, Autumn)

Prior to this month’s meeting, the committee met to discuss the club’s options regarding the growing Covid-19 pandemic. In a nutshell, it was decided unanimously to postpone our Easter exhibition and cancel all other club gatherings (except Mogo Zoo visit) indefinitely. Because we took the decision to use remote judges this year, we are looking at maintaining our monthly competitions, and we’re working on the logistics associated with that.

The decisions taken at that committee meeting were presented to the main group at the start of our monthly competition meeting. You’ll find much more information about that on our Meetings / NCC News page.

March Competition – 4 Seasons

Our March competition was judged by Wanda Amos, past president of the Forster Digital Photography Club. NCC would like to thank Wanda for agreeing to judge our competition, and for the time and effort that she put into critiquing our work.

June 15, 2020

Our Set subject for June is :   Action Shots – any action that you can capture, things like horse racing, soccer, football, netball or sports in general, Animals in fast motion.   When taking a good action shot you will need to understand the exposure triangle.  ISO, Aperture and shutter speed. For most shots you will need to have a shutter speed like 1/1000 of a second.  A fast speed can help you capture a split second shot, but as it changes the lighting of your shot you will need to adapt the ISO and aperture.     We have provided you a link for printed material below  or here is a link to a video for some inspiration - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kai_uHItyI0

Our Set subject for July is :  Portrait Shots – time to give us your best portrait shots.  Can be human or animals, can be close ups, profiles.  A good portrait draws attention to the subject.  Normally through combination of shallow depth of field, composition, lighting and colour.  A good portrait tells a story a feeling of knowing the person by the image.

Our judge this month:    Robyn Georges

General Feedback :

The Set Subject for our July Competition was “Portraits” and, as usual we also ran an Open competition across our three grades. For club members, this was also our first face-to-face meeting for several months after some of the Covid-19 restrictions were eased.

We were very fortunate to have Robyn Georges as our Judge for the month, as she is a keen portrait photographer herself, so her feedback on our images was invaluable. Robyn is a previous winner of FCC’s prestigious Top Shot competition.

Narooma Camera Club would like to sincerely thank Robyn for providing us with such informative and constructive feedback on our images, and with useful hints on how to improve our photography.  We all appreciate the time and effort Robyn put in to judging our July competition for us.

September 14, 2020

Our Set subject for September is :   Food Photography  – Food photography is arguably one of the most challenging types of photography out there. Like painting, you start with a blank canvas and build. Layer upon layer, you construct the photo until you reach the perfect balance of reality and art.

Everything in the photo is a decision. Every piece is perfectly placed by the photographer.

November 16, 2020

Our Set subject for November is :   Smoke or Shadows photography - Photography is known as the art of capturing light.  In photography, an image without a shadow is often two-dimensional in shape. But with the addition of a third component, the shadow, this shape is transformed into a form.  Now for the second subject -  Smoke art photography is one of those genres that's an acquired taste - In its purest and simplest interpretation, it's photography where the subject is smoke.  You have the choice of either of these two subjects as your set subject this month
